The founder · recently in class

From the Parkwijk in Haarlem to the top of European football. That same road stays open to everyone.

FIFA and UEFA Elite referee, and the first of non-Dutch heritage to reach the Dutch professional game.

Since 2010 he has also stood in classrooms across the country, as founder of Sport-Connecting-Us. That story, with every setback along the way, is the teaching material.

Why he does it

Since 2010, every week, in the classroom.

“I don’t do this to be seen, but because I know what it means when someone believes in you. What sport gave me, I give back, to society, every single week.”

The moment

At the highest level, between Ronaldo and Lewandowski.

The Champions League: where the road from Haarlem led.

This is the pressure he teaches from, in the classroom and in the boardroom.

Sport & safety

Where sport and safety meet.

The work maps onto what police, justice and municipalities are already trying to do: young people who stay out of crime, fewer recruited as runners, and less aggression toward emergency workers. He reaches the young people institutions struggle to reach, with a story they take from him because he lived it.

Emergency workers safe
As ambassador of the Taskforce Onze Hulpverleners Veilig, Serdar leads the #Zetjezelfnietbuitenspel campaign. “Aggression and violence don’t belong in football. Or on the street.”
Taskforce OHV · since 2021
Learning to say no
He teaches young people to resist when approached for criminal jobs. In 2025 he was named in the parliamentary letter, as part of the Offensief tegen Explosies.
Kamerbrief 28 684, no. 779
Part of a proven approach
Ambassador of Alleen Jij Bepaalt, an intervention recognised by the NJi and built on the same choices these lessons put in front of young people. The measured effect is further down this page.
Alleen Jij Bepaalt · UvA research, 2018

The guest lessons and workshops slot straight into Preventie met Gezag, the Offensief tegen Explosies and the fight against criminal recruitment, aimed at young people in neighbourhoods where the pull towards crime is strongest.

His words

“I don’t tell young people theory. I tell them what it costs to keep going.”

The work · guest lessons & programmes

Every lesson starts with footage from the game.

Inspire
Serdar's own story: from the Parkwijk in Haarlem to the top of European football, setbacks included. Real and recognisable, without gloss.
Motivate
From his story to theirs. What is your dream, and what does it cost to hold on to it when things go against you?
Activate
From talking to doing. Young people discover their own strength and the choices that are theirs to make.

We play a clip from a match, then work outward from it: respect, mindset, the choices you make, the rules you accept. Each one lands in the daily life of the young people in the room. Every programme is built for the group it is for.

From the schools themselves

What schools say.

Not our words, but the schools' own, from primary schools to vocational colleges.

Calvijn met Junior College
“Miss, I want to be a professional referee.” That is how headteacher Jolanda Hogewind opened her column about pupil Muhammet: “Serdar comes to our school, he is my idol, can I be there too?”

Recognition

The recognition is on the record.

Ministers and mayors who saw the work up close, and the government letters that name it. Every claim below links to its source.

No promise. A measurable effect.

From the University of Amsterdam effect study of Alleen Jij Bepaalt, the programme Serdar serves as ambassador for:

2×
less often in contact with police
3×
less often convicted of a crime
Reach & delivery
5,000+
young people reached through Alleen Jij Bepaalt
2010
in classrooms, through Sport-Connecting-Us

What you book is a Sport-Connecting-Us guest lesson or programme, not the Alleen Jij Bepaalt intervention itself. Serdar is an ambassador for Alleen Jij Bepaalt; the effect figures above come from the research into that programme (University of Amsterdam, 2018).
